SHOW ME THE MONEY! Channel 12 Political Director Matt Smith joined Steve and Kristin to break down the latest news in the Wisconsin Governor’s race, including the breaking news that Lt. Governor Sara Rodriguez‘s campaign may be in full panic mode over a discrepancy in her campaign funds, with a pending Wisconsin Elections Commission review. With less than 30 days until the state’s primary election, Rodriguez fired her campaign director, throwing a financial variable into an already chaotic democratic primary.
BASEMENT DWELLERS UNITE! Steve and Kristin sparred over a statistic that’s sure to send shivers up the spine of any middle-aged parents looking forward to being empty-nesters. Nearly half of young adults under 30 still live with their parents. 49% of adults under age 30 live with their parents — up 12 percentage points from 2019 — with most citing financial necessity, per latest Fed data. Is it the economy, stupid, or just laziness? You be the judge!
WHY IS YOUR CLOCK ALWAYS WRONG? With the passage of a bill to make Daylight Saving Time permanent, Americans appear to be ready to throw out the twice-a-year “clock dance,” which not only screws up our circadian rhythms (much debate abounds on that one) but also makes for some of the best talk radio content the world has ever known. Steve and Kristin tried to settle the debate, but frankly, it just sounded cuckoo.
NO LOVEFEST AT CITY HALL! What to do with the I-794 connector between the lakefront and the Marquette continues to be a highly debated topic as the Milwaukee Common Council voted to support taking down the current freeway connector in favor of a boulevard plan. The Mayor of Milwaukee, Cavalier Johnson, supports a redo. Check back in another 5 years for an update (said somewhat tongue firmly planted in cheek).
IS IT 2020 OR 2026? Steve and Kristin (along with Democratic Strategist Joe Zepecki and Attorney Jake Curtis) take on President Trump’s prime time address and the latest shakeup in the strange case of Democratic candidate for Governor Sara Rodriguez, who learned the hard way that math matters and, perhaps more importantly, putting the right people on your campaign staff goes a long way in making your life easier as a candidate.

As a fan of the bratwurst, I really, really love this story from the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel’s Rachel Bernhard and Jennifer Borresen. No surprises here, given our German heritage, with a beer chaser in Brew City, but there’s a great new book out about this very subject!

In the early 2000s, when Scott Walker was first elected Milwaukee County Supervisor, I was a teenager living in Madison. I was not paying attention to Milwaukee politics, and by 2003, I was living in Los Angeles. So, reading the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s recent exclusive on how his tenure and the pension scandal reshaped Wisconsin politics was definitely a deeper history lesson than I have had on the topic. It’s a well-written look back at a time some may not want to look back at. But it is good to remember because it gives context the the challenges Milwaukee County still faces today.

I’ll be honest here; I’ve never been a huge fan of the arts (although you could occasionally see me at a Marcus Center performance), but I’ve recently discovered a show called The Art Detectives. Not to be confused with another show called the Art Detectives, also running on the BBC. This one features real-life art historians and experts trying to assess whether or not a hundred-year-old painting is correctly attributed to the right artist. Fascinating show with a running background of historical context and intrigue. Might be my new favorite watch.

I was recently introduced to The Pudding, “A digital publication that makes awesome stories with data. It explains ideas debated in culture with visual essays. It’s awesome. I found it by someone sharing The Pudding’s most recent essay: A History of Menus is a Menu of History
New York Public Library’s Buttolph Collection of menus from 1880 to 1920, and what that said about the Americans selecting from them. Beautifully presented story of America as told through thousands of restaurant menus in the time period.
